Zohran Kwame Mamdani, 34, has been elected mayor of New York.

He made history by becoming the first Muslim to be elected mayor of New York, America's largest city.

President Donald Trump has threatened to cut New York City's budget if Zohran, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, is elected.

In a speech after his victory, Zohran thanked his family and wife.

"I am proud to be your son. I am here because of you," he said, thanking his parents.

Zohra surprised many political observers when she defeated veteran politician and former New York Mayor Andrew Cuomo to become the Democratic Party's nominee.

Zohran, a left-wing politician, Palestinian rights activist, child of immigrants, and Muslim, was not expected to defeat Andrew Cuomo, who has years of experience and the support of billionaires.

Zohra campaigned on progressive policies aimed at redistributing wealth, expanding public services, and alleviating urban poverty.
