Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed former information security chief Kataly Budanov as his new chief of staff, about a month after his former chief of staff resigned amid a corruption scandal.

β€œAt this time, Ukraine should focus more on security issues,” Zelensky said in a social media post announcing his appointment.

The 39-year-old new presidential chief of staff led the military intelligence agency that has handled repeated Russian attacks that have claimed many lives.

Andriy Remarque, who was known for his corruption, had a large political following and led the Ukrainian delegation in talks with the United States to end the war.

The Ukrainian presidency is historically the most powerful office in the country.
