Worsening Security Conditions Disrupt Humanitarian Operations in Northern Ethiopia

Worsening security conditions across northern Ethiopia are disrupting humanitarian operations and increasing humanitarian needs, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Humanitarian access has been severely constrained by disrupted telecommunications, suspended flights to and from Tigray Region and some areas of Amhara Region, as well as restrictions on key roads, OCHA said.

The disruptions have limited the movement of humanitarian workers, relief supplies and essential services, making it harder for aid organisations to reach affected communities.

Humanitarian operations are also facing pressure from funding shortages. Several humanitarian partners have reduced or suspended their activities, leaving fewer organisations operating on the ground and widening gaps in the response.

Aid agencies are continuing to monitor developments and strengthen preparedness and contingency measures to maintain assistance where access remains possible. Humanitarian partners are also conducting rapid assessments following reports of displacement and emerging needs.

OCHA said all parties need to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access so that aid organisations can reach people requiring assistance.
