A woman is in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s Eastern Beaches on Saturday morning, prompting the closure of several nearby beaches and a large emergency response.

Emergency services were called to Coogee Beach just before 11:15am local time on June 13, 2026, following reports that a swimmer had been attacked in the water.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was pulled from the surf by members of the public who immediately provided first aid before emergency responders arrived.

Police officers later assisted with first aid efforts at the scene. The woman suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg, according to authorities, before NSW Ambulance paramedics took over her care.

A CareFlight helicopter was deployed to the area, with nearby Coogee Oval cleared to enable a safe landing before the woman was airlifted to hospital for urgent treatment.

Following the incident, authorities closed Coogee Beach along with nearby beaches including Clovelly and Bronte as a precaution while investigations and safety assessments continue.
