A 45-year-old man has died after his car went through a fence on an overpass and plunged onto US Highway 45, striking a box truck in West Bend, Wisconsin, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 7:21am on Saturday, October 24, when the man was travelling west on Park Avenue, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

A preliminary investigation found that the car veered off the road to the right, passed through a fence at the top of the overpass and became airborne as it descended the embankment onto the highway. It then struck a box truck merging northbound onto US Highway 45 from Highway 33, also known as Washington Street.

The driver, a West Bend resident, was taken by ambulance to Froedtert West Bend Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The box truck driver, a 59-year-old man from Theresa, Wisconsin, was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting the overturned car and the truck in the highway median. Deputies arriving at the scene found the car driver lying beside the vehicle with head injuries. A bystander who had stopped was assisting him before emergency responders arrived.

Northbound lanes of US Highway 45 were closed to allow emergency crews to treat the injured and investigate the crash. The road reopened at approximately 10:55am.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate. Authorities have not released further information.
