Widespread Attacks Rock Mali as Army Launches Counter-Offensive Across Multiple Cities

Coordinated militant attacks swept across Mali on Saturday, targeting the capital Bamako and several key regional cities in what officials and international reports describe as one of the most extensive security breaches in recent years. The assault struck multiple locations simultaneously, including Bamako, the military town of Kati, and regional centres such as Gao, Kidal, Mopti and Sévaré. The Kati base, which hosts one of the country’s main military installations, was among the primary targets.

Reports circulating through international media, including the BBC and Reuters, said Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed during the attacks near Kati, although authorities have not yet issued a detailed official casualty list. The Malian army said it launched a coordinated counter-offensive beginning Saturday night, stating that government forces were engaged across several fronts and that many of the attackers were retreating under military pressure. Security operations, it added, remained ongoing in multiple parts of the country.

Military positions and administrative sites were reportedly hit in both urban and strategic locations, with clashes also reported in northern and central Mali. The simultaneous nature of the attacks has raised concerns over the operational reach of armed groups active in the Sahel region. Security sources cited in international reporting said the scale of the offensive marked one of the most widespread coordinated attacks in Mali in recent years, though exact casualty figures remain unconfirmed. The government has not released comprehensive data on deaths or material damage, as fighting continues in several affected areas.

Authorities said counter-operations were focused on regaining control of affected zones, with claims from the army that dozens of militants had been killed during the response. These figures have not been independently verified. The armed groups involved are widely believed to be linked to al-Qaeda-affiliated networks operating across the Sahel, which have expanded their activities in Mali and neighbouring countries over recent years. As of now, the security situation remains fluid, with ongoing military operations reported in multiple regions and no final assessment yet of the scale of the destruction or casualties.
