The head of the World Health Organization has warned that Gaza's health "crisis will last for generations to come."

Dr Tedros Adhanom told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that a massive influx of aid was needed to meet the complex needs of the people living in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has allowed medical supplies and humanitarian aid to enter since reaching a ceasefire with Hamas.

But Dr. Tedros said the amount currently entering falls short of what is needed to build the region's health system.

The official's comments came as efforts are underway to address concerns that a ceasefire reached since clashes broke out between Hamas and the Israeli army on Sunday could collapse.

The agreement is the first phase of a 20-point peace plan outlined by the White House, which includes increasing the amount of aid flowing into Gaza as well as provisions to be distributed "without interference" from either side.

The official said that Palestinians living in Gaza are facing hunger and "huge" losses.
