The World Health Organization has delivered Ebola preparedness equipment and medical supplies to Zambia as health authorities intensify efforts to strengthen the country’s readiness against potential cross-border transmission of the virus.

The consignment includes personal protective equipment, laboratory reagents, specimen transportation materials, and infection prevention and control supplies intended to support preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease and other viral hemorrhagic fevers.

The handover comes as countries in Central and East Africa continue responding to an Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo virus strain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

Although Zambia has not recorded any Ebola cases, health authorities consider the country vulnerable because of its proximity to affected countries and the volume of cross-border travel.

WHO said the donated supplies are intended to strengthen Zambia’s ability to detect suspected infections early, improve laboratory diagnosis, and support rapid response measures.

The agency said the equipment would also help protect frontline health workers through improved access to personal protective equipment and reinforce infection prevention and control systems in health facilities.
