WFP Food Aid Destroyed in Airstrike in Sudan’s South Kordofan

More than 50 metric tonnes of food aid destined for thousands of people in Sudan’s conflict-hit South Kordofan region were destroyed after an aerial attack struck two trucks operated by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The trucks were hit outside Dilling on August 30 while transporting food assistance to Kadugli. WFP said the vehicles were clearly marked with its banners and flags.

The destroyed supplies included cereals, yellow split peas, vegetable oil and salt, enough to provide lifesaving assistance to about 5,800 people for one month, according to the UN agency.

WFP is currently providing in-kind food assistance to nearly 58,000 people in Kadugli who are facing emergency levels of food insecurity or worse.

The attack adds to growing operational risks for humanitarian agencies working in Sudan, where fighting has severely disrupted food supplies and aid deliveries.

WFP said it has recorded eight aerial attacks since the beginning of the year that have damaged its premises or disrupted its operations.

“This attack is the latest example of the complex operating environment facing WFP and other humanitarian agencies in Sudan,” the agency said.

WFP called on all parties involved in the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law and protect civilians, humanitarian workers and aid assets.

“Attacks on aid workers and humanitarian operations are unacceptable and must stop,” WFP said.

The destruction of the supplies comes as humanitarian needs continue to intensify in Sudan, where millions of people have been affected by conflict, displacement and food insecurity.
