Warren Buffett is staying true to his long-standing pledge to give away his vast fortune. The legendary investor is preparing to donate more than 12 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., worth approximately $6 billion, to several foundations he has personally selected.
Since first announcing his philanthropic commitment in 2010, Buffett has pledged to give away the majority of his wealth. As of today, his personal net worth stands at $152 billion.
The bulk of the donation—more than 9 million shares—will go to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation, co-founded by fellow billionaire Bill Gates, played a pivotal role in inspiring Buffett and other ultra-wealthy individuals to commit to giving away most, if not all, of their wealth.
In addition, Buffett will allocate over 2 million shares to the philanthropic foundations associated with his family, including the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the NoVo Foundation, and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which is named after his late wife.
Buffett, who surprised attendees at this year’s Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting by announcing his intention to step down by the end of 2025, is widely regarded as the most successful investor of the past half-century. He famously transformed Berkshire Hathaway from a struggling textile company into a vast and influential conglomerate.
