Residents of Kiremu Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Oromia Regional State, who spoke to Addis Standard, said that the worsening security situation in the past five months has led to the displacement of residents and a humanitarian crisis.

The residents attributed the “movement of Fano militants in the area” to the worsening security situation.

Ato Alebacew Weyesa, the official of Kiremu district, confirmed that more than 1,000 people have been displaced due to the recent security crisis caused by militants, adding that most of the displaced are residents of Ashu Kutaye, Gudina Jiregna, and Babu Villages in Kiremu district.

A resident said, "There was a series of shootings and clashes that lasted all night on November 23, 2018." He added, "We abandoned our crops and homes and took refuge in relatives' houses in Kiremu town, fearing for our lives."

The Kiremu area of East Wollega is a place that hosts frequent displacements, and the displaced people have repeatedly called on the Oromia Regional Government and the Federal Government to urgently intervene to establish lasting peace and return them to their villages.
