Veteran Oromo Musician Elfenesh Keno Dies

Veteran Oromo musician Elfenesh Keno, whose career helped shape the development of Afaan Oromo music, has died after an illness.

Keno, who had recently returned to Ethiopia after spending several years in Norway, had been receiving medical treatment before her death, according to information released following her passing.

Born in Sibu Guto, a historic locality near Nekemte in East Welega Zone, Keno began her artistic career at a young age and went on to become a prominent voice in Oromo music and cultural expression.

Her career extended beyond music. In 1976, Keno joined the Oromo struggle and used her art to express themes of rights and freedom, giving her work a significant place in the history of Oromo cultural and artistic movements.

She continued performing and producing music throughout much of her life, building a body of work that made her a familiar figure to generations of Afaan Oromo music listeners.

Keno’s death comes after decades of contribution to an Afaan Oromo music industry that has played an important role in preserving cultural identity and providing a platform for social and political expression.

She leaves behind a legacy spanning music, culture and activism, with her work continuing to be remembered by audiences and artists in the Oromo cultural sphere.
