Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medals to former U.S. President Donald Trump during a White House gathering on Thursday.

"Today feels like a historic day for us Venezuelans," Trump said publicly for the first time following the meeting.

The event comes amid ongoing allegations of corruption and human rights abuses against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas.

Trump expressed his appreciation on social media, describing the gesture as a "remarkable sign of cooperation." Machado and her party have also indicated that they will not support the 2024 election campaign of the incoming Venezuelan leadership, which has not signalled support for the former American president.

During the meeting, Machado described Trump as "a remarkable figure," highlighting his achievements. After leaving the White House, she told supporters, "We can rest on President Trump." She also addressed reporters, saying, "I have received my Nobel Peace Prize medal. It is a unique recognition for our freedom that I wish to highlight."
