Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday evening, leaving parts of the country damaged as rescue teams search for survivors and assess the scale of the destruction.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit first, followed about a minute later by a stronger 7.5 magnitude quake. The tremors were centred west of Caracas, where several buildings collapsed and communities were left requiring urgent assistance.

The earthquakes are among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century, according to the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), which said families have been displaced and affected areas remain in need of emergency support.

GEM said its response teams are mobilising with local partner I Love Venezuela and are expected to arrive on the ground on Friday. The teams will assess damage, identify humanitarian needs and coordinate relief operations with local organisations.

The organisation said previous operations in Venezuela during the 2019 refugee crisis helped establish partnerships that will support a faster and wider response to the latest disaster.

Rescue crews are continuing operations in affected areas as authorities work to determine the full impact of the earthquake sequence.
