Escalating unrest in Bolivia has drawn strong concern from senior US officials. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said he is “very concerned” about the situation after speaking with Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz.

Protests that began in early May as strikes have evolved into a nationwide movement involving labour unions, miners, transport workers, and rural groups. The demonstrations are mainly against austerity measures and rising living costs, with some groups calling for the president’s resignation.

Landau described the unrest as destabilising democratic governance and politically driven. He warned that it could undermine Bolivia’s recent democratic progress and have broader regional consequences.

The protests have also affected financial activity, with several banks in La Paz temporarily closing branches due to security concerns. The US is working to ensure anti-government forces do not prevail.

The situation highlights the challenges facing the Paz administration less than a year after taking office. Bolivia’s stability remains a key concern for regional diplomacy and investors.
