US to End Ukraine Temporary Protected Status on October 19

The United States will end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukraine on October 19, 2026, bringing an end to the immigration protection and related benefits currently available to eligible Ukrainian nationals in the country.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services said Ukrainians who remain eligible for TPS but are still waiting for renewed employment authorisation documents will receive notices extending their expired work permits until October 19. The measure applies to pending TPS-based employment authorisation applications carrying the A-12 or C-19 category codes.

The extension does not prolong Ukraine’s TPS designation beyond October 19. The Department of Homeland Security previously extended the designation for 18 months, from April 20, 2025, to October 19, 2026.

USCIS said its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) programme will continue to verify approved TPS status using documents associated with the protection.

TPS is a temporary US immigration protection for nationals of countries designated by the government because conditions such as armed conflict or natural disasters make it unsafe for them to return. The termination of Ukraine’s designation means affected beneficiaries will need to rely on another lawful immigration status, if available, after the October deadline. USCIS has said that people whose TPS is terminated may have another lawful basis to remain in the US and may also be eligible for employment authorisation on that basis.
