The United States assumed the 12-month presidency of the Group of 20 major economies on Monday, pledging to steer the forum toward policies aimed at boosting global economic growth, securing energy supply chains, and advancing technological innovation, Reuters reported.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department said the presidency would prioritise three core themes: “unleashing economic prosperity by limiting regulatory burdens, unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains, and pioneering new technologies and innovations.”

The US presidency follows South Africa’s tenure and comes amid heightened global economic uncertainty, with trade tensions, elevated interest rates, and uneven post-pandemic recovery shaping the international outlook. Analysts note that Washington appears intent on narrowing the G20 agenda to focus on tangible economic outcomes, potentially placing less emphasis on climate, health, and other social issues.

The G20’s next leaders’ summit under the US presidency is scheduled for December 14–15, 2026, at Trump National Doral Miami in Florida. Observers say the US may use the forum to bolster global investment flows, particularly in energy and technology sectors, while signalling a “back-to-basics” approach to multilateral economic cooperation.
