The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that states may restrict participation in female athletic competitions to athletes classified as female at birth, handing a legal victory to supporters of laws limiting transgender athletes' participation in women's and girls' sports.

The decision upholds state laws that reserve female athletic competitions for biological females, concluding that states may adopt such policies under their authority to regulate school athletics.

The ruling marks a significant legal development in the national debate over transgender rights and follows a series of executive actions by President Donald Trump since returning to office that seek to limit federal recognition of gender identity and expand policies based on biological sex.

The White House welcomed the decision, saying it supports efforts to protect fairness and equal opportunities in women's sports. The administration said the ruling is consistent with measures it has taken to restrict participation by transgender athletes in female competitions and to pursue investigations into organisations it believes are not complying with federal requirements under Title IX.

The administration has also introduced policies recognising only two sexes for federal purposes, restoring biological sex as the basis for official documents, restricting federal support for gender-affirming care for minors, limiting funding for programmes promoting gender identity policies and changing military and education policies related to transgender individuals.

The ruling is expected to influence legal challenges to similar laws enacted across the United States and could shape future debates over the scope of federal civil rights protections for transgender people.
