U.S. forces carried out strikes against Iranian drone infrastructure in southern Iran after what American officials described as an imminent threat to military and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The strikes targeted an Iranian drone operation linked to the port city of Bandar Abbas, where a ground control station was hit as it prepared to launch what would have been a fifth attack drone.

Four Iranian attack drones were also shot down by U.S. forces. The military action came amid heightened tensions in the strategic waterway.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Navy had fired warning shots at a U.S. oil tanker attempting to pass through the strait.

Iranian sources later said four vessels tried to transit the passage early Thursday but were also turned away following warning fire.

The U.S. official said the targeted drone activity posed a direct risk to both U.S. forces and commercial shipping in the region.
