The US Department of State has announced the release of a commemorative passport marking the country’s 250th anniversary, introducing a redesigned travel document that blends national symbolism with existing security standards.

The special edition passport features custom artwork and updated visual elements intended to reflect themes tied to the nation’s founding, while retaining the security features used in standard US passports for identity verification and international travel.

The launch comes as the United States marks Independence Day on July 4, commemorating 250 years since independence, a milestone the State Department described as recognising the country’s founding ideals of liberty, self-government and unity.

Officials said the commemorative passport is intended as a symbolic item connecting citizens to the nation’s historical legacy, while also representing the continuity of the US passport as a widely recognised and secure global travel document.

The department said the design is meant to reflect both historical remembrance and forward-looking aspirations, framing the document as part of a broader national commemoration of the anniversary year.
