US Social Security benefits will increase by 3.6 percent in 2027, raising average monthly retirement payments by US$75, the Social Security Administration (SSA) said.

The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will take effect in January 2027 for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries, including recipients of retirement, survivors and disability benefits.

Payments to about 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will increase from December 31, 2026, the agency said. Some beneficiaries receive payments under both programmes.

The adjustment is intended to account for changes in the cost of living and is applied to benefits paid through the federal Social Security system.

SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the adjustment would apply to about 76 million Americans across the two programmes.
