Donald Trump has said the United States will not attend the G20 summit in South Africa, saying the country discriminates against white people.

Trump also called South Africa's hosting of the world's largest economies in Johannesburg later this month a "great disgrace."

South Africa's foreign ministry described the White House's decision as "regrettable", and the ministry's spokesman, Crispin Phiri, told BBC News Hour that "the success of the meeting will not depend on one member state".

None of the political parties operating in South Africa, including those representing Afrikaners and white South Africans, have said anything about genocide taking place in the country.

In an interview with the BBC's News Hour program, Phiri said Trump is "using South Africa's troubled colonial past to engineer the crisis they envision."

"South Africa has its own problems and we are working to address them. I think crime affects everyone, regardless of race," he said.

"We will continue our meeting without the United States," he added.
