US Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a prominent Republican lawmaker and longtime figure in American foreign policy debates, has died at the age of 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.”

Graham’s death prompted tributes from Republican colleagues, including Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), who described him as a bold leader whose influence would continue for generations.

“I am stunned and deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend, Senator Lindsey Graham,” Ernst said in a statement. “The Senate has lost a bold leader whose influence will be felt for generations.”

She offered condolences to Graham’s family and loved ones, adding, “May he rest in peace.”

Graham, who represented South Carolina in the US Senate since 2002, was a prominent voice on foreign policy and national security issues. He served in key Senate positions, including as chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the Budget Committee, and was known for his strong positions on international affairs.

He was also a close ally of President Donald Trump in later years, despite having been a critic of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Graham’s office said his family appreciated prayers and requested privacy during the period of mourning.
