US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has criticised President Donald Trump’s decision to exempt Russia from a new sanctions measure approved by Congress, arguing that the move undermines national security and does little to ease the cost of living for American households.

Gillibrand, a Democrat from New York who serves on the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees, issued the statement after Trump signed an executive order exempting Russia from the measure, which Congress passed last month with bipartisan majorities.

“Instead of offering economic relief from the high prices he has inflicted on the American people, President Trump is giving relief to murderous dictator Vladimir Putin,” Gillibrand said.

She argued that the exemption would not reduce costs for American families and accused the administration of rewarding Russian President Vladimir Putin despite Russia’s attacks on civilians.

The senator also criticised the administration’s spending priorities, saying it had allocated resources to military operations and other wealthy interests while failing to provide sufficient support for healthcare, food and housing.

The dispute centres on the administration’s decision to exempt Russia from a sanctions measure passed by lawmakers. Gillibrand’s statement did not provide further details on the scope of the exemption or its expected economic impact.
