US Seeks Extradition of Canadian-Arrested Man in Hawaii Child Exploitation Case

US authorities are seeking the return of a 62-year-old man arrested in Canada following an indictment in Hawaii over alleged sexual exploitation of a child.

Donald Steven Lang was apprehended in Canada this weekend at the request of US authorities following cooperation between the FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), according to the US Department of Justice.

Lang was indicted in Hawaii on allegations that he produced sexually explicit images involving a minor between September and December 2024. Court documents allege the activity took place aboard his 52-foot sailboat, Ishi, while he was sailing and frequently staying in Hawaii.

The FBI's Honolulu office is investigating the case, with Canadian law enforcement units in British Columbia assisting in Lang's apprehension. The Justice Department's Office of International Affairs also supported the operation.

“Protecting children from sexual predators is a priority of the highest order,” said A. Tysen Duva, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Criminal Division. “We will continue to pursue this alleged offender and work with our law enforcement partners to return him to the United States to face trial.”

US Attorney Ken Sorenson for the District of Hawaii credited the FBI and Canadian authorities with securing Lang's arrest and said prosecutors remained committed to bringing those accused of offences against children before the courts.

Lang had previously been indicted in Idaho in a separate child sexual abuse case involving allegations dating from 2003 to 2007.

If convicted in the Hawaii case, Lang faces a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison, as well as supervised release and a fine of up to 250,000 US dollars. Any sentence would be determined by a federal judge after consideration of sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

The Hawaii prosecution is being handled by Justice Department trial attorney Eduardo Palomo and Assistant US Attorney Barbara Eucker.
