The United States has imposed sanctions on eight individuals and entities accused of supporting armed groups in Sudan, targeting networks Washington says have helped sustain the country’s war through weapons procurement, recruitment and logistical operations.

The measures were announced as part of a wider effort to pressure actors contributing to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which has created a major humanitarian crisis and increased space for militant groups to operate, according to the US government.

The sanctioned networks are accused of supplying weapons, explosives and foreign fighters to both sides of the conflict, prolonging hostilities and complicating international efforts to secure a ceasefire.

The US also announced a second round of sanctions against Sudan under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act. The measures include restrictions on financial assistance from international financial institutions, additional export controls by the Commerce Department and a ban on Sudanese state-owned airlines operating in the United States.

The Trump administration called on Sudan’s warring parties to accept and respect a humanitarian truce aimed at reducing civilian suffering and improving access for aid organisations.

Washington also urged foreign actors to end support for the rival forces and pressed international partners to push for a comprehensive halt to fighting and unrestricted humanitarian access.
