US Sanctions 36 Targets Over Support for Iran’s Aviation Sector

The United States has sanctioned 36 entities and individuals across multiple jurisdictions for allegedly supporting Iran’s aviation sector, as Washington intensifies efforts to restrict the Iranian regime’s access to the global financial system.

The sanctions target companies and individuals accused of providing services to Iran’s aviation industry, which the US says has been used to support weapons proliferation and terrorism activities beyond the country’s borders.

The latest action follows an August 24 determination by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control that Executive Order 13902 would apply to Iran’s aviation sector. Under the authority, OFAC is designating the remaining active Iranian airlines as part of a campaign to isolate the sector from the international economy.

OFAC is also targeting several companies based outside Iran that it says have provided cargo and general sales services to Mahan Air and helped procure aircraft for the airline.

Mahan Air has previously been designated by the US in connection with allegations that it provided support to Iran’s proliferation and terrorism-related activities.

The latest measures form part of Operation Economic Outcast, under which the US administration is seeking to cut financial channels supporting the Iranian regime.

"We will not relent in our campaign to shut down the Iranian regime’s financial lifelines, including the aviation sector," the US Treasury said.
