US Revokes More Than 175,000 Visas Under Trump Administration

The United States has revoked more than 175,000 visas held by foreign nationals since President Donald Trump returned to office, citing criminal activity, visa violations, fraud, threats of violence and national-security concerns, the State Department said. The department said most of the revocations followed encounters with law enforcement. Assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related offences were among the leading causes, while other cases involved reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud and embezzlement.

The figures were released as the State Department highlighted its continuing visa-vetting operations, which it said are intended to ensure that visa holders comply with the conditions of their entry and do not pose a threat to the United States. The department said it had also revoked visas in cases involving foreign nationals accused of serious crimes, including rape, kidnapping, human trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors and possession of child sexual abuse material.

In one case, a foreign national was arrested for driving with heroin and a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit. Another was accused of using a company that purported to help vulnerable patients access healthcare to participate in a Medicaid fraud scheme involving more than $5 million in allegedly false claims. The State Department also cited cases involving alleged investment fraud and visa fraud, including a foreign national accused of falsifying company revenue and forging documents to obtain a visa.

More than 100 visas were revoked by a US embassy in North Africa in cases involving parents who officials said had travelled to the United States primarily to give birth so their children would obtain US citizenship. The department said it had also revoked visas held by foreign nationals who celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk or expressed support for violence against Americans.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has separately determined that several foreign nationals are deportable on foreign-policy grounds, according to the department. Those cases include individuals linked to the Cuban and Iranian governments, a Laotian national convicted of a child-sex offence who was pardoned by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and a Kuwaiti national accused of expressing support for violence against Trump and referring to Americans as his “enemy”. The State Department said the visa revocations formed part of the administration’s wider effort to remove people it considers to pose risks to public safety or national security. The department said it would continue to investigate visa holders and revoke visas where violations or other grounds for removal are identified, describing a US visa as a privilege rather than a right.
