The US government's annual Human Rights Implementation Report found that there is "credible evidence" that Ethiopian government forces and militias have committed "extrajudicial killings" against civilians.

The report also stated that evidence indicates that the government committed "abuse" during security operations and failed to "ensure accountability" of officials.

Among the human rights violations allegedly committed against civilians are the "extermination", "torture" and "inhuman" punishments of the prisoners.

The report, which the US Department of State publishes annually on more than 200 countries and territories, including Ethiopia, was released on Tuesday, August 8, 2025.

The report examines the human rights situation in Ethiopia in 2024. The country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs compiles this report using "reliable" sources of information, such as reports from human rights institutions and media reports.
