The United States has drawn up a plan to carry out regime change in Iran, including targeting individual leaders, two U.S. officials told Reuters.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the confidentiality of the plan, declined to provide further details. But they said the plan would be implemented only after President Trump orders it.

If diplomatic efforts fail, the United States has been considering military action, and the U.S. military is reportedly preparing for weeks of strikes on Iranian security and nuclear facilities.

In recent weeks, Trump has moved a large number of his military assets to the Middle East. But his main force is a large fleet of warships and fighter jets.

The United States is reportedly targeting senior Iranian officials if it launches military action. Israel has targeted Iran with a series of strikes last year, injuring dozens of senior Iranian officials and politicians.

The officials briefed on the Iran strike plan did not say how reliable the United States had information that would allow it to target Iranian leaders.

Reuters did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the White House and the Defense Department on the U.S. plan.
