A proposed US-supported quarantine facility in Kenya is awaiting government approval as Washington prepares to deploy health personnel to support containment efforts linked to a growing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

The plan involves members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, with some officers already notified of potential deployment.

If approved, the facility would be used to house US nationals who have been exposed to Ebola in the region or are assessed to be at high risk of infection.

The preparations come as health authorities respond to a widening outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has affected parts of Congo and Uganda.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The CDC has said that no cases of Ebola have been confirmed in the United States.
