The United States marked the 250th anniversary of its founding on Friday with nationwide celebrations led by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who used the occasion to highlight the country's history, resilience and future aspirations.

Speaking during the "Salute to America" event on the National Mall, Trump addressed the nation despite thunderstorms that forced the cancellation of parts of the evening programme in the nation's capital.

The president described the United States as a country that has remained resilient through 250 years of political and global change, saying its constitutional system had endured while many empires and kingdoms had faded. He said the country's history reflected its commitment to freedom and liberty and expressed confidence that its strongest years still lie ahead.

Trump pointed to milestones including the expansion across the American frontier, construction of the national railway network, completion of the Panama Canal and the country's role in the two world wars as examples of the nation's achievements over the past two and a half centuries.

"Our country is just getting started, because the best is yet to come," Trump said.

Earlier in the day, Vance took part in anniversary events in New York City, including the International Naval Review 250, the International Aerial Review and Sail 4th 250. During the visit, he boarded the USS Kearsarge, participated in a reenlistment ceremony for sailors and observed naval vessels and military aircraft.

In his remarks, Vance said the anniversary represented 250 years of progress achieved through the efforts of successive generations of Americans. He cited contributions from historical figures including George Washington, James B. Eads and Henry J. Kaiser.

The vice president also urged Americans to reject what he described as one-dimensional portrayals of the country's history that focus only on its shortcomings. Instead, he called for recognising both the nation's achievements and its challenges while pursuing a shared future.

The anniversary celebrations brought together government officials, members of the armed forces and the public to commemorate 250 years since the founding of the United States. Despite weather disruptions in Washington, commemorative events proceeded across multiple locations, reflecting the milestone's national significance.
