US Man Sentenced To Three Years For Threatening Vermont Prosecutor

A 55-year-old man from the US Virgin Islands has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for making interstate threats and cyberstalking a Vermont prosecutor who was handling a criminal case against him.

Todd Hoyte of Saint Thomas was sentenced on September 8, 2026, by US District Judge Mary Kay Lanthier. He will serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.

The court scheduled a December 3 hearing to determine whether Hoyte must pay restitution as part of his sentence.

According to court records, Hoyte made more than 10 cellphone calls to Vermont between July 29 and September 25, 2024, while living in the US Virgin Islands. He left voicemails for Douglas DiSabito, the Grand Isle County State’s Attorney, that included a threat against DiSabito’s life, as well as insults, slurs and other derogatory language.

DiSabito was prosecuting Hoyte for a criminal offence at the time.

Hoyte pleaded guilty to making interstate threats and cyberstalking. As part of his plea, he admitted that he made the communications to harass and intimidate DiSabito, while intending to issue a threat and knowing that the messages would be perceived as threatening.

Jonathan A. Ophardt, first assistant US attorney for the District of Vermont, commended the FBI for its investigation and thanked the US Marshals Service for assisting with the case.
