US Launches Multi-Agency Task Force to Tackle Violent Crime in Louisiana

US federal and local law enforcement agencies have launched a new multi-agency task force in northwest Louisiana to target violent crime and drug trafficking, with authorities reporting about 65 arrests and eight federal indictments since the operation began in July.

The Gun Crime Abatement and Targeted Offender Response Team, known as the GATOR Task Force, was formally announced on September 28 in Shreveport by Zachary A. Keller, US attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, and the FBI’s New Orleans Field Office.

The task force began operations on July 9 and brings together FBI special agents and task force officers from the Louisiana State Police with law enforcement agencies across the region. Participants include the Shreveport Police Department, Bossier, Caddo and Sabine parish sheriff’s offices, the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Caddo Parish Juvenile Services and the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Keller said the initiative is intended to centralise the response to violent crime and focus resources on offenders considered responsible for driving local violence.

Since its creation, authorities have seized more than 400 pounds of marijuana and THC products, over 20 pounds of methamphetamine, 25 firearms and four stolen vehicles, according to the US attorney’s office.

The task force is also conducting several ongoing federal investigations and has been involved in cases that have resulted in federal prosecutions, including the investigation of Tre’veon Jackson, according to Keller.

The announcement was attended by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux.

Keller said the task force builds on existing cooperation among law enforcement agencies while providing a centralised rapid-response structure for investigations involving violent offenders and drug-trafficking networks.

The initiative combines federal investigative and prosecution resources with state and local law enforcement operations, allowing agencies in northwest Louisiana to coordinate arrests, investigations and the seizure of drugs, firearms and stolen property.
