US Launches Foundry School To Build Workforce For Manufacturing Revival

The Trump administration is set to launch a national programme aimed at training the skilled workers needed to support a renewed US manufacturing push, as Washington expects demand for millions of workers across semiconductors, defence and energy.

Foundry School will be launched on Thursday, September 3, as a project of Pax Silica, a US State Department initiative focused on securing trusted global supply chains for strategic technologies.

The administration estimates that American manufacturers will need about 3.8 million skilled workers by 2033. The new programme is intended to prepare workers for roles ranging from engineering and technical positions to entrepreneurship and industrial leadership.

Vice-President JD Vance is scheduled to headline the launch in Washington, alongside senior administration officials, university leaders and industry executives.

Foundry School was announced by Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg at the second Pax Silica Summit in June as a workforce-development partnership with Stanford University.

The programme is built around an advanced manufacturing curriculum developed by Stanford for American students, supplemented by lectures from seven other US universities: Arizona State University, Georgia Tech, Ohio State University, Penn State, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Kansas and Vanderbilt University.

Across the eight universities, the programme will deliver 17 sessions led by founders and chief executives from advanced manufacturing companies in the US and countries participating in Pax Silica, including South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and India.

The sessions are designed to cover the practical requirements of building and operating advanced manufacturing businesses, bringing together academic training and industry experience.

The programme is part of the administration’s broader effort to expand domestic manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains for strategically important technologies.

The administration says its reindustrialisation agenda has already attracted trillions of dollars in planned industrial investment to the US. Foundry School is intended to address the workforce constraint that could limit how quickly that investment translates into new production and jobs.

The initiative also gives the Pax Silica framework a workforce-development component, extending its focus beyond supply-chain security to the skills required to sustain advanced manufacturing in the US. The launch event is scheduled to begin at 8:20am on Thursday at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
