US applications for unemployment benefits declined slightly last week, indicating continued stability in the labour market despite rising pressure in some states and industries.

Initial jobless claims fell by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 226,000 for the week ending June 13, according to data released by the US Department of Labor. The figure followed a revised 230,000 claims in the previous week.

The four-week moving average, which smooths weekly volatility, increased by 4,000 to 223,250, suggesting that underlying layoffs have edged higher over the past month.

While new claims declined, the number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits increased. Continued claims rose by 24,000 to 1.81 million for the week ending June 6, while the four-week average climbed by 9,750 to 1.788 million.

The insured unemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.2 percent, reflecting a labour market that continues to show relatively low levels of unemployment despite signs of gradual adjustment.

State-level data showed uneven trends across the country, with several states recording increases linked to sector-specific job losses.

Pennsylvania and Minnesota reported the largest rises in unadjusted initial claims, increasing by 5,381 and 5,373 respectively. Pennsylvania officials attributed the increase to layoffs in transportation and warehousing, administrative services, accommodation and food services, and healthcare support.

Minnesota’s increase was mainly linked to seasonal and structural layoffs in the education sector.

California and Texas also recorded notable increases, with California adding 5,095 claims and Texas reporting an increase of 2,835. Texas cited job losses across accommodation and food services, healthcare, wholesale and retail trade, as well as mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction.

Tennessee was among the few states to report a decline, with initial claims falling by 1,077.
