US Immigration Arrests Target Convicted Offenders Including Murderer and Rapists

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested several immigrants convicted of serious crimes, including murder, child rape, rape and assault, as the Trump administration steps up immigration enforcement across the country.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the latest arrests included people from Mexico, Laos, Guatemala and Morocco who had previously been convicted of serious offences in several US states.

Among those arrested was Esteban Enriquez-Munoz, a Mexican national convicted of murder, robbery and assault in Orange, California, according to DHS.

ICE also arrested Viengxay Chaleunphong, a national of Laos who was convicted in Woburn, Massachusetts, of three counts of rape of a child and assault and battery involving a child under the age of 14.

Jendrick Ordonez-Calate, a Guatemalan national convicted of rape in Sussex County, Delaware, was also among those arrested.

In New Jersey, authorities arrested Jorge Avila-Velez, a Mexican national convicted of possessing, viewing or controlling between 1,000 and 100,000 items of child sexual abuse material, DHS said.

Another person identified by the department was Hamza Boufnichal, a Moroccan national convicted in Fairfax, Virginia, of obstruction, false identification, grand larceny, and assault and battery.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said ICE officers were continuing to arrest and remove immigrants who are unlawfully present and have criminal convictions.

"President Trump made a promise to the American people that he would Make America Safe Again, and DHS is delivering on that promise," Mullin said, adding that the department would continue to pursue people it considers dangerous criminal offenders.
