The U.S. House of Representatives has approved legislation providing fresh assistance to Ukraine alongside expanded sanctions on Russia, highlighting emerging divisions within the Republican Party over foreign policy and presidential authority.

The measure, passed by a vote of 226 to 195, advances the Ukraine Support Act after months of delay and reflects bipartisan backing for the package.

The legislation authorises more than 1 billion US dollars in direct assistance to Kyiv and provides up to 8 billion US dollars in loans aimed at supporting Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction efforts.

It also introduces expanded sanctions and export controls targeting Russian financial institutions, as well as the oil and mining sectors.

The vote also underscores growing willingness among some Republicans to diverge from party leadership on foreign policy matters.
