The US Social Security Administration is preparing to integrate a new federal child savings programme into its newborn registration system, linking account creation to the process used to issue Social Security numbers at birth.

Under the planned changes, hospitals will be instructed to include information on the accounts in birth registration procedures managed through the Enumeration at Birth programme. The system is being adjusted so that enrolment can take place automatically when a Social Security number is assigned, with state-level forms also being modified to support the process.

The agency said it will begin updating hospital guidance next week and will revise official communications, including Social Security card mailers for newborns and its public webpages. It also plans to coordinate with external partners to expand awareness of the programme and how families can access it.

The initiative is linked to “Trump Accounts,” a savings vehicle created under the Working Families Tax Cuts law signed on July 4, 2025. The programme allows accounts to be opened for minors under the age of 18 who hold valid Social Security numbers.

Eligible children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, may receive a one-time government contribution of 1,000 US dollars. Officials said around six million children have already been enrolled in the system.

The Social Security Administration said children eligible for the contribution will begin receiving the funds on July 4, 2026. Families can also access enrolment details and guidance through TrumpAccounts.gov, including instructions for submitting IRS Form 4547.

Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the programme is intended to strengthen long-term financial security for children, describing Social Security numbers as central to the system’s operation and highlighting the agency’s role in coordinating enrolment with hospitals and state authorities.

The programme forms part of broader federal efforts introduced through the 2025 legislation that established the child savings framework for minors nationwide.
