US Gives Iran Talks “Space” as Military Operations Reportedly Pause

The United States has suspended military operations against Iran as President Donald Trump gives diplomatic efforts more time to produce an agreement, marking a shift from confrontation towards negotiations after a period of escalating hostilities. US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Trump was allowing talks with Tehran “a little bit of room” to progress, while a US source told CNN that military operations were “on hold”. Regional US allies have not reported new Iranian attacks during the pause in US airstrikes.

The temporary halt follows nearly two weeks of military escalation between the two countries, with Washington and Tehran exchanging strikes that raised concerns over a wider regional conflict. The pause has created an opening for diplomatic channels involving intermediaries, including Oman, to pursue a potential ceasefire arrangement. Negotiations are focused on several unresolved issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, security guarantees and the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global energy trade. Disruptions around the strait have heightened concerns over oil supplies and shipping costs.

Iran has indicated it would stop further attacks as long as the United States maintains the pause, according to sources familiar with the discussions. However, the suspension does not amount to a formal ceasefire, and US officials have maintained that military options remain available if diplomacy fails.
