US Central Command (CENTCOM) has carried out a third round of strikes against Iranian military targets this week, targeting facilities and capabilities linked to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The July 11 operation hit approximately 140 Iranian military targets using precision weapons launched from land- and sea-based fighter aircraft, unmanned drones and naval vessels, CENTCOM said.

The targets included missile and drone sites, naval capabilities, ammunition storage facilities, communication networks and coastal surveillance locations.

The latest strikes bring the number of Iranian targets hit by US forces during three nights of operations to more than 300, following attacks on commercial shipping in the strategic maritime corridor.

CENTCOM said the operations were directed at reducing Iran’s ability to target civilian mariners and commercial vessels travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy shipping route.

Despite the strikes, commercial vessel movements through the strait have continued. Since early May, US forces have supported the transit of more than 800 commercial vessels carrying about 400 million barrels of crude oil through the waterway, CENTCOM said.
