The US president has signed into law legislation requiring the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allow wireless emergency alerts to be sent to mobile phones during shark attacks.

The measure, known as S. 1003 or “Lulu’s Law,” directs the FCC to issue an order clarifying that the nation’s wireless emergency alert system can be used to warn the public about shark attack threats.

The law is named after Lulu, a young victim of a fatal shark attack, and aims to strengthen public safety measures in coastal areas by enabling authorities to send rapid alerts to nearby mobile phone users during such incidents.

The wireless emergency alert system is currently used for warnings including severe weather events, missing children alerts and other public safety emergencies.

Supporters of the legislation said the measure would provide local authorities with another tool to quickly notify swimmers, beachgoers and coastal communities when a shark threat is identified.

The FCC is now required to establish the framework allowing shark attack warnings to be transmitted through the emergency alert system.
