Federal enforcement activities in the United States came under renewed scrutiny on Thursday after the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis and a separate shooting involving federal officers in Portland, Oregon.

In Minneapolis, hundreds of protesters marched through freezing rain along a major city thoroughfare, chanting “ICE out now” and holding signs reading, “Killer ICE off our streets.” Demonstrators had earlier gathered outside a federal facility serving as a centre for the administration’s latest immigration enforcement operations.

The Portland incident occurred outside a hospital in the afternoon. A man and a woman were shot while inside a vehicle; their conditions have not been disclosed. The FBI and the Oregon Department of Justice are investigating the shooting.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and the city council called on ICE to halt all operations in the city until the investigation is complete.
