The United States launched a new wave of strikes against targets in Iran on Wednesday, deepening a military confrontation that has placed a fragile ceasefire between the two countries under renewed strain.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces conducted what it described as self-defence strikes against multiple Iranian military targets, including surveillance capabilities, communication systems and air defence sites. The operation was carried out on the orders of President Donald Trump, according to the military command.

“CENTCOM forces launched strikes on Iranian military surveillance capabilities, communication systems, and air defense sites across Iran,” the command said in a statement. It added that US Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy assets used precision-guided munitions against targets deemed to pose a threat to American forces and international commercial shipping in regional waters.

The latest attacks came hours after Trump warned that further military action would follow unless a peace agreement is reached, signalling a tougher US posture as efforts to stabilise relations with Tehran falter.

Washington said the strikes were a response to what CENTCOM described as Iran’s “unwarranted and continued aggression”. The military did not immediately provide details on casualties or damage assessments.

The operation marks the latest escalation in a conflict that appeared to ease in April when the two sides agreed to a ceasefire following weeks of hostilities. That truce is now facing its most serious test as both countries exchange military strikes and increasingly confrontational rhetoric.

Neither the White House nor Iranian authorities have indicated whether direct diplomatic contacts are underway following the latest strikes.
