The United States and the Dominican Republic have signed a Nuclear Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (NCMOU) aimed at expanding peaceful nuclear cooperation, strengthening energy security and supporting future collaboration in civil nuclear applications.

The agreement was signed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Dominican Republic Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos, creating a framework for cooperation in areas including nuclear technology, safety, security and nonproliferation standards.

The memorandum comes as both countries seek to deepen economic and strategic ties, with Washington describing the agreement as part of efforts to promote responsible nuclear development and broader energy cooperation with partners.

Under the framework, the two sides are expected to explore opportunities related to civilian nuclear applications, including potential uses in electricity generation and medical isotope production, while maintaining international safety and security requirements.

The US State Department said NCMOUs serve as diplomatic mechanisms for developing long-term civil nuclear partnerships and strengthening engagement between governments and industry.

The agreement also reflects continued efforts by the Trump administration to expand strategic cooperation with allied countries in sectors linked to energy security and economic development.

The United States said the partnership is intended to encourage collaboration with American industry and support the Dominican Republic’s efforts to develop a more diversified energy system.
