The United States has designated 6,576 census tracts across the country as Qualified Opportunity Zones, extending tax incentives for private investment in economically distressed communities for another decade from January 2027.

The US Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced the new designations, which cover eligible communities across all 50 states, US territories and the District of Columbia.

The designations will take effect on January 1, 2027, and remain in place for 10 years under changes introduced through President Donald Trump's Working Families Tax Cuts legislation, which permanently renewed the Opportunity Zone programme and introduced enhanced incentives for investments in eligible rural communities.

Of the 6,576 designated census tracts, 2,594 are in rural areas, according to the Treasury Department.

The programme is designed to attract private capital into underserved and economically distressed communities by offering tax incentives to investors who direct eligible investments into designated zones.

The latest designations follow a nomination process that began after Treasury and the IRS identified 25,332 eligible census tracts in April, including 8,334 rural areas. Governors and the mayor of the District of Columbia began submitting nominations in July.

An additional 130 eligible census tracts, including 28 rural areas, were nominated during the statutory window.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the renewed programme would provide investors, entrepreneurs and local authorities with greater certainty to commit capital to communities that have historically received limited investment.

IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano said the designations would help states attract long-term investment into rural, underserved and economically distressed areas.

The latest round builds on the original Opportunity Zone programme established under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The Treasury Department said the initiative had generated more than 110 billion US dollars in private-sector investment since its introduction.

The revised framework also establishes a 10-year redesignation cycle, allowing eligible communities to be nominated again under future designation rounds.
