US Democrats Sue Trump Administration Over Alleged Election Interference

Senior US Democratic leaders have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking to block what they describe as federal efforts to pressure state and local election officials to remove eligible voters from registration rolls and restrict the counting of ballots ahead of the midterm elections.

The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, according to a statement released by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic Party officials.

The plaintiffs include Kirsten Gillibrand, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee; Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee; Andy Beshear, chair of the Democratic Governors Association; and Daniele Monroe-Moreno, chair of the Nevada State Democratic Party.

The Democratic leaders are asking the court to prevent the administration from compelling states to remove eligible voters from registration lists or refuse to count legally cast ballots, arguing that the alleged actions threaten voting rights and the independence of state election administration.

In their statement, the leaders said the US Constitution assigns states responsibility for administering elections and argued that the president lacks authority to determine state voter registration lists or decide which ballots are counted.

They also alleged that the administration had threatened election officials with criminal retaliation to pressure them into restricting voting access. The statement did not identify specific officials targeted or detail the alleged threats.

The plaintiffs said they were seeking immediate judicial intervention to prevent the administration from using federal authority to influence election administration ahead of the midterm elections.

The lawsuit comes amid political disputes over election rules and the division of authority between the federal government and state election officials. The outcome will depend on the legal arguments and evidence presented to the court.
