US forces carried out fresh strikes in southern Iran on Monday targeting missile launch sites and boats allegedly attempting to lay mines, even as diplomatic talks continued in Doha over a possible agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s foreign minister and top negotiator met Qatar’s prime minister in Doha to discuss a potential deal with Washington focused on maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Donald Trump said talks with Iran were proceeding “nicely” but warned that further attacks could follow if negotiations failed. US Central Command confirmed additional strikes designed to protect American troops.

Iran also said it had downed a hostile stealth drone using a new air defence system. The dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme remains central to the conflict.

Marco Rubio said the United States would allow diplomatic efforts every opportunity to succeed before considering other options.
