The United States has carried out an airstrike targeting al-Shabaab militants in southern Somalia as part of joint counterterrorism operations with the Somali government.

U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strike was conducted on June 19, 2026, in coordination with Somalia’s federal government. The operation took place near Welmaro, about 103 kilometres north of Kismayo.

AFRICOM said it continues to work with the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces to weaken al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten U.S. personnel and citizens abroad.

The command did not provide details on the military units or equipment involved, citing operational security concerns.

Al-Shabaab, an armed group linked to al-Qaeda, has carried out attacks in Somalia and neighbouring countries as part of its long-running insurgency against the Somali government.
