The US Coast Guard is searching for six people after a medical transport aircraft travelling from Bermuda to Boston crashed off the coast of Nantucket, with crews locating a debris field linked to the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration notified the Coast Guard at about 2am Saturday that it had lost contact with the Gulfstream G100, registered as C-GRJP, while the aircraft was en route to Boston.

Six people were aboard, including four Canadian nationals and two Bermudian nationals. Their next of kin have been notified.

Search crews later located a debris field that was confirmed to be associated with the missing aircraft. The Coast Guard said efforts to locate the six people remain underway, with the Boston-based Coast Guard cutter William Sparling continuing the search overnight.

The operation involves aircraft and crews from the Coast Guard, New York Air National Guard and other partner agencies, including HC-144 and HC-130 aircraft, MH-60 and HH-60 helicopters, and boats from Coast Guard Station Brant Point.

Authorities said search crews had covered about 1,644 square miles over approximately 27 hours.

The Coast Guard said the search remains ongoing and that further information will be released as it becomes available.
